The Complete Moving House Checklist for 2026
A step-by-step timeline and checklist for moving house in the UK. From offer accepted to moving day, everything you need to organise.
8-12 weeks before: Offer accepted
Instruct a solicitor or conveyancer immediately — this is the longest part of the process. Arrange your mortgage offer if not already in place. Book a survey (at minimum a HomeBuyer Report, or a full Building Survey for older properties). Notify your landlord if renting. Start decluttering — the less you move, the cheaper and easier it will be. Get quotes from at least three removal companies.
6-8 weeks before: Legal and survey
Your conveyancer will conduct searches (local authority, environmental, water and drainage). Review the survey report carefully and negotiate on any issues found. Ensure your mortgage valuation is completed. Set a target completion date and communicate it to all parties. Start changing your address with banks, HMRC, DVLA, and your employer. Arrange buildings insurance to start on completion day.
4-6 weeks before: Exchange approaches
Chase your conveyancer for progress on searches and enquiries. Transfer your deposit to your conveyancer's client account before exchange. Arrange a final viewing of the property. Confirm your removal company booking. Begin packing non-essential items. Set up mail redirection with Royal Mail (allow 5 working days). Notify utility providers of your moving date.
2-4 weeks before: Exchange to completion
Exchange contracts — this is the point of commitment. Your deposit is now held and there are penalties for pulling out. Confirm your completion date with the removal company. Pack systematically, labelling boxes by room. Arrange to transfer or set up utilities (gas, electric, water, broadband, council tax) at the new address. Deep clean your current property if required by your tenancy agreement.
Moving week
Confirm everything: removal company timing, key collection arrangements, final utility meter readings. Pack an essentials box with kettle, mugs, toilet roll, phone chargers, medication, and basic tools. Defrost the freezer. Take photos of meter readings at both properties. On completion day, your conveyancer will confirm when the money has arrived — only then do you get the keys.
First week in your new home
Take meter readings immediately on arrival. Test all appliances, heating, and water. Change the locks (previous owners may have given keys to neighbours or cleaners). Register with a local GP, dentist, and optician. Update your address on the electoral roll. Introduce yourself to neighbours. Set up broadband — this often takes 2-3 weeks, so order early. Register for council tax at your new address and ensure you are removed from your old one.
